Add and edit a menu item
Create a new item, set its price and photo, place it in a menu and category, and control how it can be ordered.
Menu items are the things customers actually order. Every item has to sit inside a menu and a category, because that is how Dinerly knows where to show it, so make sure you have at least one of each before you start. If you do not yet, see Create and manage categories.
Add an item
- In the sidebar, open Menu. This opens the Menu Manager, which has tabs across the top: Items, Menu, Modifiers, Variants, Groups.
- Click Create in the top right and choose New Item.
- On the New Menu Item form, fill in:
- Placement, where you pick the Menu and then the Category the dish belongs to.
- Name, for example Margherita Pizza.
- Description, which is the short line customers read underneath the name. It is optional, but it is the only chance you get to sell the dish to somebody who cannot ask a waiter about it.
- Base price.
- Photo, which you add by dragging an image onto Add a photo. PNG, JPG and WebP files are accepted, up to 10 MB.
- Set Availability at the bottom, which decides whether the dish can be ordered right now and on which channels. This is explained in Item availability.
- Click Create Item.
Once the item exists you can also give it modifiers, which are the add-ons and choices that go with it, and variants, which are its sizes. Those are covered in Add modifiers and Set up variants.
Edit an item
- Go to Menu → Items and click the item’s row.
- Make your changes on the Edit Menu Item form.
- Click Save Changes.
The Save Changes button stays greyed out until you have actually changed something, so if it looks unavailable it usually means your edit has not registered rather than that anything is broken.
Change several items at once
On the Items tab, tick the checkbox on more than one row and a bar appears with the actions you can apply to all of them: Change category, Change price, Add modifiers, Remove modifiers, and Delete selected. This is far quicker than editing items one by one when you are making the same change across a whole section of the menu.
Menus and items belong to one location. Everything you add or edit here applies to the location currently chosen in the switcher at the top of the sidebar, so check you are in the right restaurant before you start. It is a frustrating thing to discover after you have added twenty dishes.
