Menu management

Create and manage categories

Group your menu items into categories, control their VAT rate and POS tile colour, and assign them to menus.

Categories are the sections your menu is divided into, such as Starters, Mains and Drinks. Every item has to live inside one, which is why most people create a handful of categories before they start adding dishes.

Create a category

  1. In the sidebar, open Menu.
  2. Click Create and choose New Category.
  3. On the New Category form, set the following:
    • Name, for example Appetizers or Main Courses.
    • Description, which is optional.
    • Active, which decides whether customers can see the category. Leaving it switched off is useful while you are still building the section.
    • VAT Rate (%), which is applied to the items in this category, so that you are not setting a tax rate dish by dish.
    • Till tile colour, which is the colour this category’s tile appears in on the till. Giving each section its own colour makes a real difference to how fast staff can find things during a rush.
    • Assign to menus, where you tick which of the location’s menus this category belongs to. At least one is required, because a category that is not on any menu has nowhere to appear.
  4. Click Create Category.

Add categories from inside a menu

You can also manage categories while you are editing a menu, which is often more natural because you can see the running order as you work:

  1. Go to Menu → Menu and open a menu to edit it.
  2. In the Categories section you can use Add category to create a new one, drag the rows to change the order customers see them in, switch a category between Active and Inactive, use Edit details, or Delete one.

A category created this way is automatically assigned to the menu you are editing, which is why you are not asked the “Assign to menus” question.

Edit or delete a category

Open a category to change any of its details. To remove one, use Delete Category.

Deleting a category deletes everything inside it. The category goes, and so do all of its items and their modifiers, permanently and with no way of bringing them back. If what you actually want is to stop customers seeing a section for a while, switch it to Inactive instead: it disappears from the customer’s menu, but all of your dishes and prices stay exactly where they are, ready for when you need them again.
