How printing works in Dinerly
The four ways a printer can be connected, and how to choose the right one for your restaurant.
This is the article to read before the others. Printing causes more confusion than anything else in Dinerly, and almost all of it comes from not knowing which of the four connection types you are using. Once that is clear, every other printing article makes sense.
Everything described here is found in Settings → your location → Printers.
The four ways to connect a printer
| Connection | What it means | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sunmi Cloud | The printer has its own internet connection and receives receipts directly. | Kitchen printers away from the till; a second site |
| Connected to this device | A printer attached to the tablet running the till. | A Sunmi tablet with a printer already set up on it |
| LAN (network) | The printer sits on your venue’s network and the till sends to it. | Fixed kitchen and bar printers on a cabled or Wi-Fi network |
| Bluetooth | The printer is paired directly with the tablet. | A single counter printer next to the till |
Sunmi Cloud is the most forgiving of the four, because the printer collects the job for itself over the internet. It does not matter where the tablet is, or whether anybody has the till app open, which is why it suits a printer sitting in a kitchen at the other end of the building.
LAN and Bluetooth work the other way round: the tablet is the one doing the printing. That means the tablet has to be switched on, it has to be on the same network as the printer or paired with it, and it has to be set as the printing device. What you get in return is speed and independence from your broadband, because these two keep printing during an internet outage and cloud printing does not.
Adding a printer
- Go to Settings → your location → Printers.
- Click Add Printer.
- Give it a Printer Name your team will recognise, such as Kitchen, Bar, Pass or Counter. Avoid names like “Printer 2”, because the name is what somebody has to choose from in a hurry when they are working out where a ticket went.
- Choose the Connection type and fill in what it asks for. Each type has its own article, linked below.
- Save, and then click Test print.
Please do not skip the test print. It is the difference between discovering a problem now, while you have time to deal with it, and discovering it at half past seven on a Friday with a full restaurant.
Belt and braces
Some printers have both an internet connection and a local one, the Sunmi NT311 being the common example. On those, you can fill in the Sunmi serial (SN) even when you have set the printer up over Bluetooth or LAN. If the tablet that normally does the printing is switched off or cannot be reached, the receipt goes out over the cloud instead of simply failing. It costs you nothing to fill in and it can save you a service.
Which printer prints what
To begin with, every printer you add prints every order in full. As soon as you have more than one printer, you will want each of them to print only the dishes belonging to its own station, which is covered in Send dishes to the right printer.
Next steps
- Connect a Sunmi printer over the cloud
- Connect a printer over your network (LAN)
- Connect a Bluetooth printer
- Print from the tablet you’re using
