Split a bill

Divide a table's bill evenly, by item, or by custom amounts — and take each person's payment.

A table of six with four cards between them, one person who only had a coffee and somebody insisting on paying for the wine is the situation Split bill is built for. Rather than doing the arithmetic on a napkin, you let the till work out what each person owes and then collect the payments one by one.

  1. Open the table’s bill on the till.
  2. Go to the Actions tab and tap Split bill.
  3. Set Payers, which is the number of people who are going to pay. This does not have to match the number of covers, because three people often pay for a table of six.
  4. Choose how you want the bill split.

The three ways to split

  • Evenly divides the total equally between the payers. It is the quickest option and the one most tables ask for, particularly when everybody ate roughly the same amount.
  • By item lets you assign each dish to the person who ordered it, so everybody pays for exactly what they had. Use it when one person had three courses and another had a salad, because an even split in that situation tends to cause an argument at the table.
  • Custom lets you type in each person’s amount yourself, which is what you need when the table has already agreed between themselves who is covering what.

Whichever you choose, the till lists each Payer and the amount they owe, so you can read it out and take the payments in order.

Take the payments

Pick the payment method at the top under Everyone pays by, then tap Take payments and work through the payers one at a time. Each payment is recorded the moment you take it rather than all at the end, and the running Collected total shows you how much you have taken so far. That figure is what tells you whether you can let the table leave.

If one person wants to pay a different way from everybody else, take their share on its own from the normal Pay screen using a custom amount, and then split whatever is left between the others.

Splitting a bill does not change anything in the kitchen. The split only decides how the money is collected, so the food that was already sent stays exactly as it was and no new ticket is printed. Nobody in the kitchen will ever know the table split the bill, which is exactly how it should be.
