Take payment on the till

Cash, card, gift cards and vouchers — plus tips, change, and getting the receipt to the customer.

When the customer is ready to settle up, open their order on the till and tap Pay.

Take the money

  1. Choose the payment method: Cash, Card, Gift card or Voucher.
  2. Check the Amount. It starts at the full outstanding balance, which is what you want most of the time, so tap Exact to accept it. If the customer is only paying part of the bill, tap Custom Amount and type in the figure they are paying.
  3. Tap Take payment.

If the customer is paying with cash, enter how much they actually handed you rather than the amount owed, and the till works out the Change for you. When they tell you to keep the difference, tap Keep change as tip and it is recorded as a tip instead of being left as change you never gave back.

If the customer is paying by card, run the card on your card machine in the usual way and then record the amount here. Dinerly does not talk to the card machine, so this step is what keeps your books and your reports in line with what really went through the terminal. Skip it and your takings will look lower than they were.

Tips

Before it finishes, the till asks Add a tip? You can choose one of the suggested amounts or tap Custom to type in whatever the customer has decided on. If a tip goes on by mistake, Clear tip takes it straight back off.

Paying with more than one method

Some tables want to pay in pieces — two friends, one with cash and one with a card. Enter the first amount and tap Add & split. The till records that part of the payment and shows you the Outstanding balance that is still to come, and you carry on taking payments until that balance reaches zero. While there is still something left to pay, the order is shown as Part-paid, so nobody assumes the table has settled and clears it.

If what you actually want is to divide a bill evenly between people, or work out who had what, use Split a bill instead.

The receipt

Once the order is fully paid, the till offers to Send receipt in three ways:

  • Print sends it to your receipt printer.
  • Email asks for the customer’s email address and sends it there.
  • Text sends it to their phone.

After that, tap New order if there is somebody waiting to be served, or Done to go back to where you were.

If nothing prints, the problem is almost always on the device rather than in the order. Printing runs through the till app on the tablet itself, and that tablet needs a receipt printer set up for this location before it has anywhere to send the receipt. See How printing works.
